Grow the capacity of the community housing sector to create affordable housing for low income people. New Zealand Housing Foundation (NZHF) is a Charitable Trust that specifically targets areas of the New Zealand housing sector that require support. The aim of the organisation is to develop a robust community group housing sector that promotes innovative sustainable housing solutions targeted to need. The New Zealand Housing Foundation has rapidly become a significant participant in building capacity for Community Housing Providers and has implemented innovative housing solutions including the introduction of an equity share home ownership programme. Values Delivery of “real” housing outcomes NZHF plays an important role in leveraging housing outcomes. It undertakes this primarily through shaping policy, forming partnerships with Community Housing Providers and supporting projects that specifically target people on low to moderate incomes and those that are under housing stress. Empowering communities NZHF provides support for communities by being a catalyst for change. The Foundation does this by providing a co-operative approach by bringing together the public and private sector to ensure commmunity inspired outcomes. This community ownership of a solution promotes the development of neighbourhoods that are healthy places in which to live, where people take responsibility for themselves and each other. Innovative housing solutions NZHF looks beyond the traditional approaches. Rather than provide direct service delivery, NZHF develops solutions that leverage the involvement of public, private and not for profit community sectors. Promoting and facilitating the development of affordable and appropriate housing solutions is a priority. Key Strategies NZHF has identified that it will target its resources primarily to the following key strategic areas. 1) Community Housing Provider Sustainability Support and assist Community Housing Providers to be more effective in delivering housing solutions over time to become self sustaining. 2) Affordable Home Ownership Expand opportunities for low income earners, who can afford it, to become home owners. Develop and offer new home ownership products that provide a pathway to home ownership for households who would otherwise be long term renters. 3) Community Housing Provider Projects Initiated Through NZHF’s Assistance / Services Encourage and support Community Housing Providers to realise ideas and opportunities that receive support and produce “real” housing solutions. 4) Community Development & Renewal Programmes Support urban renewal programmes that facilitate community development initiatives specifically in Iwi communities and in areas where the current social housing needs of that community are not being met. 5) Effectively Use Knowledge and Research to Enhance the overall Housing System Advocate to inform and influence future strategies, policy and direction for the housing sector. Support community based housing research that identifies needs and solutions for local housing issues. Promote innovative ideas and solutions that will improve housing options for people and enhance the overall housing system. 6) Organisational Effectiveness & Sustainability NZHF to be a viable and credible charitable organisation that leverages resources and partners with public, private and not for profit sectors to achieve its strategic goals.
